Halkidiki is a large peninsula between the Thermaikos and Strymonikos Gulf, which is often mentioned in Ancient Greek mythology. The name of the peninsula of Sithonia derives from Sithon, a son of Poseidon. Sithonia is the place to go for the perfect sandy beaches, crystal clear sea, ancient Greek sites, and of course popular Greek cuisine. Halkidiki is also a large olive growing region with about 5 million olive trees that cover a third of the area with almost 20000 olive oil producers!
Metamorfosi is a picturesque village that is located at the western entrance of the Sithonia peninsula of Halkidiki. It boasts a ‘blue flag’ beach just east of the town called Makrya Lagada and near the seaside resort of Nikiti, where many tourists go for holidays but history enthusiasts will also find it interesting to explore the nearby archaeological site of Olynthos. Tourism and fishing are the main occupations of Metamorfosis. The locals have put much work into making this town look attractive to tourists with a busy main street and some parks along the waterfront. Metamorfosi is also the home to one of the largest producers of olive oil in Halkidiki. Each year from mid September to mid October the region practically shuts down as everybody heads to the olive groves.
The nearest airport is Thessaloniki International Airport “Macedonia”, only 83 klm away and a journey of approximately one hour by car or bus.
